Tie down protection

Air Conditioning and Hurricanes: Safe Preparation

In Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County, prepare your air conditioner before a storm arrives. No precaution guarantees protection from damage. People’s safety and instructions from local authorities come first.

Before the storm

Remove loose furniture and objects near the equipment while conditions are still safe. Keep the area accessible for inspection and follow your manufacturer’s instructions. Do not improvise tie-downs or alter wiring or refrigerant lines.

Have a professional evaluate deteriorated mounting or supports. Raising or relocating a unit requires professional work. If flooding threatens, turn the system off at the thermostat only when safe. Stay away from electrical controls surrounded by water. Trane explains HVAC flood risks and preparation.

During and after the storm

Do not go outside to inspect equipment in dangerous conditions. If flooding, a shifted unit, damaged wires, smoke or a burning smell is involved, leave the system off and arrange an inspection before using it again. A dry exterior does not establish that the equipment is safe.

Do not open panels, handle refrigerant or attempt electrical repairs. Never run the unit with a cover in place. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the inspecting professional’s recommendations.

Get ready for the service visit

When safe, note what happened and take photographs from a safe distance. Have the equipment brand, model and symptoms available. These details help describe the problem but do not replace a diagnosis.
