10 Tips to Reduce Air Conditioning Energy Use
If your electric bill rises, review both your habits and your air conditioner’s condition. South Florida weather, humidity, your home and electricity rates affect costs. No single measure guarantees a fixed saving.
Ten places to start
- Review thermostat schedules for your routine and comfort needs.
- Inspect the accessible filter and replace it as the manufacturer recommends, using the correct size and type.
- Keep vents clear of furniture and curtains.
- Keep doors and windows closed while cooling your home.
- Use curtains or blinds to reduce solar heat.
- Check weatherstripping and ask how to address air leaks without blocking required ventilation.
- Use fans when people benefit from them; fans do not produce cold air.
- Limit oven use during the hottest hours.
- Keep lamps and other heat-producing devices away from the thermostat.
- Arrange professional maintenance, including drains, coils and system operation.
For household habits and indoor heat, see the Department of Energy guidance. For equipment care, see the ENERGY STAR maintenance checklist.
Check what changed
Compare kWh and billing days, not just the dollar total. Note changes in occupancy, thermostat settings or other appliance use. Bringing this information to a service visit helps explain why you are requesting an assessment.
When to request help
If cooling declines, ice appears, water leaks or new noises develop, request a diagnosis. Do not open panels or handle electrical components or refrigerant. A high bill alone does not establish that refrigerant is low or that you need a replacement system.
